Brief History of Children's Stories

Storytelling is one of our favourite activities at children's parties. It's grand telling a story, seeing their little eyes light up as imaginations stir, and having them interact with the characters and narrative of the tale we tell.

JoJoFun's brief history of children's stories

It's no chance thing that both we and the children love stories so much, because stories are part of what makes people who they are - they can be found in every single culture on the planet, from the myths and legends of native tribes in farflung places to soap operas on our televisions!

Rainbow Loom: History in the Making

Girls, boys, and even their parents have been 'hooked' on the craze that is Rainbow Loom. And yet barely two years have passed since this widely successful product first made a splash in the marketplace.

Where did it all start? In the unlikely place of former Nissan engineer Cheong Choon Ng's garage. His daughters already enjoyed looming with rubber bands and he wanted share the enjoyment with them - but his fingers were too big. One day, Ng, with his engineer's hat on, took to the family garage and invented a device out of pins and a block of wood. This allowed him to create the looms just like his daughters. And what's more, after a few upgrades to the device he was able to design rubber band bracelets even more elaborately than his daughters could by hand.

Mum's the Word: What It Means to Me to be a Mother

By Jolène Emery

My world has undergone tremendous, monumental earth-shaking changes since having my little Lily; mainly, my attention shifted from what I saw in the mirror to another being.

My deepest awareness of what it means to be a mother is to provide non-judgmental love and support to another human being, allowing their individuality to shine, encouraging them to find strength and knowingness in who they are. This, I believed would only come from dad and I, but Lily has taught me that she too provides this. Where I believed I was teaching Lily to grow, she, in truth has taught me to grow. There is an infinite circle of expansion in our relationship. She teaches me, as long as I remain open, to see beyond that which I know, to reach inside of myself and pull out all that I am.

Rice Krispies Creations

The Perfect Gluten Free Alternative to Birthday Cakes

We are sure you have heard of Rice Krispies Squares! But have you heard of Rice Krispies Cakes and other Krispies Creations? My husband, the creative genius that he is, decided to take the fabulously delicious recipe for Rice Krispies squares and literally mould it into themed creations that the children loved. We’ve enjoyed munching on various themed cakes over the years such as Sponge Bob, Monsters, and a surfer dude on waves. One year, he even crafted a Star Wars fire-fighter out of the rice crispies recipe. Our most recent creation, for the delight of one child's love of the meat paddy - the burger with bun, lettuce, ketchup and candles. We dipped the burger paddy in melted chocolate – let it set in the fridge for 30 minutes and added other sweetie things to make the lettuce and ketchup.

One thing's for sure, everyone who has come into contact with this version of the tasty treat, has always devoured it and always asks for seconds. It’s definitely a lightweight alternative to the traditional cake (which is very delicious too – don’t get me wrong)!

To get started, here's a recipe for Rice Krispies Original Treats

INGREDIENTS
· 3 tablespoons butter
· 1 package (10 oz., about 40) JET-PUFFED Marshmallows
· OR
· 4 cups JET-PUFFED Miniature Marshmallows
· 6 cups Kellogg's® Rice Krispies® cereal

DIRECTIONS
1. In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat.
2. Add KELLOGG'S RICE KRISPIES cereal. Stir until well coated.
3. Using buttered spatula or wax paper evenly press mixture into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Cool. Cut into 2-inch squares. Best if served the same day.

MICROWAVE DIRECTIONS:
In microwave-safe bowl heat butter and marshmallows on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth. Follow steps 2 and 3 above.

Microwave cooking times may vary.

Note
-For best results, use fresh marshmallows.
-1 jar (7 oz.) marshmallow crème can be substituted for marshmallows.
-Diet, reduced calorie or tub margarine is not recommended.
-Store no more than two days at room temperature in airtight container.
-To freeze, place in layers separated by wax paper in airtight container. Freeze for up to 6 weeks. Let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving.

Why not have a go for your next big celebration? See what you can come up with. When you're finished, send us pics of your creations to include on our Pinterest page!

Creating tips

· Plan your design beforehand as the recipe hardens quickly.

· Line your setting dishes with plastic wrap as the mixture can get very sticky and may not come away from your moulding tools.

3 Best Children's Party Tips

Here are three top tips and tricks for making your children's party a success!

1. Help guests and entertainers find your party venue by placing a cluster of balloons out in front. This works whether you're celebrating at home, a hall or having a restaurant party!

2. Be sure the cake is ready and sliced before the food - then you can hand it out after the food without delay!

3. If cake cutting takes too much time anyway, consider having Cake Pops - a delicious preprepared alternative (see photo).

Travelling to Turkey – On a Broom!

As I gazed out at the Black Sea, sun over-head and a trail of giggling children behind me on the extended broomstick we sat on and ran with, I smiled and thought how fabulously surreal. It was a sight surely to bring smiles to onlookers!

We were running along the cliffs by the Black Sea on a very sunny afternoon acting out “Room On The Broom”, by Julia Davidson. Our client wanted this story to be the theme of his son’s 6th birthday party and to weave this theme throughout the entertainment we provided. The children had masks of cats, dogs, birds, etc. to put them into character and our client narrated the story as we acted it out.
